Do you remember the makeup counter at Nordstorm downtown? Smack dab where Chanel, Estee Lauder and Clinque beautified women for years is a brand-new burger joint, Burger Study—the latest creation from the owners of Indy’s notorious St. Elmo Steak House and Harry & Izzy’s. The relaxing environment resembles that of the other two restaurants with its warm, rich and masculine interior, but with an added dimension of an Ivy League-style bar—or like its name suggests, a “study.” Located on Georgia Street, right around the corner from Harry & Izzy's, it’s the perfect spot to pop in while downtown for an event or just because you’re craving a good cocktail and an exceptional burger.

The menu

The burgers are all cleverly named with the college experience in mind: Homecoming, Walk of Fame, Doctorate, Going Greek and even B.Y.O.B (build your own burger). Of course there’s no need to B.Y.O.B. as the bourbon runs fruitful, the beer steady and the wine, well, as would be expected from this family of superb Indianapolis restaurants, outstanding and easily paired with the variety of gourmet ingredients placed in a bun.

But burgers aren’t the only thing on the menu. One of the most popular items is the beer cheese tots. Vice President of Operations Chris Clifford, said they couldn’t decide on whether to put pretzels and beer cheese on the menu or tater tots. So, he said, the chef—who just happens to be Ryan Pickering of Harry & Izzy’s fame—came up with crispy tots topped with Smoking Goose bacon, chives, Tulip Tree hops cheese and crushed pretzel pieces. The only thing missing from the delicious concoction, a fried egg. Our bet is that makes it on the menu eventually.

In addition to the tots and burgers, the salads at Burger Study are impressive and include a tuna poke salad, brussels sprouts and burrata, chopped Caesar, and a BLT or Cali salad. And if the main courses aren’t enough, house-made onion rings, fresh cucumber tomato salad, mac n cheese, zucchini straws or a loaded-potato salad can accompany any dish without disappointment.

And, although the food is good enough to write home about—I mean the restaurant does have a collegiate theme—one of the things that makes Burger Study an Edible Indy favorite, is its pledged support to use local and sustainable food sources.
