Food and Growers Association Winter Conference
Growing Together

The Food & Growers Association (FGA) will hold its 13th annual Winter Conference, “Growing Together” Saturday, February 2, 2019, at Batesville Middle School, 201 N. Mulberry St., Batesville, IN, from 9 AM to 3 PM. All FGA members and the public are invited to attend.

Keynote speaker for the Grower’s Session is a returning favorite, Ben Cohen from Small House Farm in Michigan. He will speak to both consumers and producers on the topic of "Sowing the Seeds of a Sustainable Future.” The founder of the Michigan Seed Library will address seed sowing, planting a successful garden, spacing, timing, and why companion planting is beneficial.

Sessions tailored to both growers and consumers include presentations by Larry Bledsoe who will speak about managing insects and pests in both home and commercial gardens. Bledsoe is a Purdue-trained entomologist who speaks extensively for the Indiana Master Naturalist and Master Gardener programs.

Additionally, a session tailored for producers features Tim Schwipps and Robert Zupancic as they discuss soil health in pasture and cropland settings, rotational grazing, cover crops and programs available to farmers. Schwipps is the is the Natural Resources Conservation Service district conservationist for Ripley and Jefferson counties. His fellow-presenter, Zupancic, is an NRCS grazing specialist in southeastern Indiana.

Other not-to-miss presentations are Darren Bender’s of Brambleberry Farm, Paoli, IN. He will speak to attendees about edible plants for landscaping and composting. Those interested in the fermenting trend will learn from Dillsboro’s Linda Cox, the owner of “Bread to Perfection.” She speaks locally and nationally on how to prepare fermented foods.

A lunch, which is included in the ticket price, will be catered by Izzy's at Hillcrest and will feature many locally-sourced foods.

Various locally-grown products and handmade treasures will be available at the conference’s winter market from 9-11 a.m. and from 1-3 p.m. The market is open to the public, not just conference attendees.
