Reader Blessings for Thanksgiving
In our winter issue story, Through the Lens you will see a quote from Michael Symon, “Every lesson I learned as a kid was at the dinner table. Being Greek, Sicilian and Ruthenian—we are an emotional bunch. It is where we laughed, cried and yelled—but most importantly, where we bonded and connected.” It is so true. I often say to people that if there isn’t tears or laughter at a meal, then there isn’t a meal. Thanksgiving is that meal. We give thanks for what we are grateful for and as you can see from some of our readers, some of those things we are most grateful for are just getting through the day. EI: What is a funny memory you have during Thanksgiving?
When I first moved to New York City after college my brother and I gathered with all of our friends in my little sublet in Woodside, Queens and baked a turkey in the tiniest of ovens. I had collard greens for the first time, and we all sat on the floor (due to that 20-something approach to decor - less is more) eating and laughing our asses off, at what I cannot remember. It was the first time I did a holiday as an adult on my own and it was fabulous. - Colleen, Edible Indy managing editor
The first year my husband and I spent Thanksgiving at my family's house, he brought a VHS recording of a football game from the 90s to watch. My family hasn't had cable tv in years and the thought of Thanksgiving without football was just too much for him. - Caryn, Graphics, Edible Indy

We once over-cooked the turkey. It happens. We laughed and felt like Chevy Chase and Beverly D'Angelo in "National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation," which, by the way, is the movie I love to watch after Thanksgiving. - Colleen

EI: Do you have a fail proof tip you want to share for your Thanksgiving meal?
Serve more veggies than heavy sides - plates will still be filled but your stomach will thank you afterwards! - Caryn

EI: What do you drink during thanksgiving?
Gin & Tonic. My uncle introduced me to this drink everyone else in my family derided as a "pine tree in a glass". But I appreciated the fresh, botanical cocktail, and was thrilled to introduce my uncle to the locally distilled Golf Gin from Hotel Tango last year. - Katie, Hotel Tango
I like a cool ginger beer while I cook, then wine at dinner and tea or hot chocolate to slow down at night. - Colleen
EI: Do you have a favorite cooking gadget you use during the holiday?
Hand crank grinder for cranberry relish. - Sandy
Definitely my cooking thermometer so I can discern when the turkey is done. - Colleen
Nutrabullet. Anything that could be blended is, whether its mashed potatoes or cookies, we always through it in the nutrabullet.. - Caroline
