Edible Indy caught up with Kelly Wenning of Tuttle's Orchard to give you a sneak peak at this family owned orchard and farm experence. We recommend packing up your car and taking a drive to the orchard, have some lunch, grab a strawberry shortcake, a dozen warm apple donuts and of course apples!

Edible Indy: What do you love the most about working with Tuttle Orchard?

Kelly Wenning: I could probably write a book about why I love working for Tuttle Orchards anyways. It is a great place to work because everyone makes you feel valued and welcomed on the team. It is fun to help our customers make special memories on the farm with their families too!

EI:  What is your favorite apple treat at Tuttle Orchard?

KW: I always love an apple cider slushy especially on sunny days but the Cafe's Apple Bread is also DELICIOUS and I can't pass up getting some to take home whenever I see it has been made!

EI: What is the item that is your best seller during the summer?

KW: Our #1 selling item in the summer is our tomatoes! It is followed closely by sweet corn and peaches.

EI:  At your farm store tell us 5 local makers / farmers you sell and support.

KW: We have so many great vendors that it is impossible to pick a top 5... so we wanted to let you know about five recent NEW vendors we have in our Farm Store.
1. Lamb from Sunshine Valley Farm- Carthage, IN
2. Goat Cheese from Risin' Creek Creamery- Martinsville, IN
3. Beef Products from Fischer Farms- Jasper, IN and grass fed beef from Dairy Hill Farm- Greens Fork, IN
4. Maple Syrup from Firm Root Farm- Muncie, IN
5. Frittle from Newfangled Confections- Indianapolis, IN (Frittle is a combination of brittle and fudge!)

EI: What is something really unique that you offer to the public?

KW:Something unique we offered for the first time in 2021 is our cut flower experience! We will be doing it again this summer because it was a great success. Customers buy the jar and then we provide scissors for them to cut and fill for their own bouquets- they can cut as many flowers that can fit in the jar to take home and enjoy! It allows them to be creative in their design and makes for a fun, unique outing for families and friends to do together.

EI: What is the can’t miss event this summer at the orchard and when is it and why shouldn’t it be missed?

KW: We have been asked for a long time to have our Tractor Town Kids Play Area open more often than just in the fall. We heard our customers and it's going to happen this summer!!  Tractor Town will be open on Wednesdays in May, June, and July from 10am to 1pm unless it is raining. This will be a great time to play because there will be less crowds than in the fall for the kids! It is $7/kid to play. Ages 1 and under and adults are free. You do not have to pre-register to come and play and you will purchase your pass at Tractor Town that day. Just keep in mind to check our website for updates if the weather is bad.

Additionally, for our preschool families... We are having Preschool Playdates this summer that correspond with Tractor Town being open. These experiences will be on Wednesdays (available times vary by date) and include story time or a short lesson and a fun craft to take home which will last about a half hour and then they can play in Tractor Town for as long as they wish while it's open from 10am to 1pm. Pre-registration is required for this! Details can be found here: https://www.indianapolisorchard.com/science-on-the-farm-spring-series-of-preschool-playdates-at-the-orchard/
