Garfield Park Farmers Market: First ever farmers' market for the area
The opening weekend for the first ever Garfield Park Farmers Market (GPRM) was held Saturday, May 7th. The market will be open each Saturday from May through October 9:00am–12:30pm. The GPFM is located in Garfield Park, in the parking lot next to the Tennis Courts, near the intersection of Shelby Street and Southern Avenue.
The GPFM was founded by Garfield Park neighbors Julia Woody and Ashley Brooks, both with extensive ties to the local food and farming scene here in Indianapolis. They recognized that Garfield Park would be an ideal setting for a farmers market, and would also serve the community as the only food-only market on Saturday mornings between Broad Ripple and Greenwood.
As a food-focused farmers market, vendors that participate in the GPFM will be selling fresh produce, meat, eggs, baked goods, and more, all of which come from Indiana. Several vendors, like Big City Farms and South Circle Farm, who were early supporters of the GPFM, are located within a few miles of Garfield Park.
Additionally, the GPFM will proudly accept SNAP, and has been approved to provide Fresh Bucks, a double-up program, so that income eligible customers will be able to receive twice as much of the fresh, local food that their families need.
GPFM Founder and Market Master Julia Woody said, “Shopping at farmers markets puts your dollars into local farmer’s pockets. It helps them survive and that is the only way to keep the local food economy up and running.”
