Sacred Saison, Shower Thoughts
Homebrewing is a wonderful hobby with a wide range of the dark arts of fermentation, from entry level to full blown all grain brews. For a home brewer there are many kits available and to spice things up a bit we are testing out the Brewferm Buckrider Sacred Saison starter kit. Included in the kit is a good quality fermenter (with spout!), a standard design airlock, powdered sanitizer, a very handy bottling tube (with push valve!), a real hydrometer, lots of additional accessories and of course the Sacred Saison Craft Brew Mix. Everything included in the system is of premium quality with great attention to detail for including everything needed for first time or avid home brewers.
Brewing Day
Being a firm disciple of Charlie Papazian, I started with the standard RDWHAHB (relax, don’t worry, have a home brew). The included instructions are clear and concise with ease of navigation. Creating the home brewing was simple and before I knew it, I was done with my wort cooling waiting for the yeast to be pitched. I quickly drew off a sample, pitched the yeast, and measured the specific gravity with the included hydrometer – 1.043. Now the waiting game. The airlock was plugged in, the fermenter moved to a dark corner and the next day I found the package happily bubbling away. The mysterious bubbling liquid slowly starts to transforms into golden elixir that will quench the dry throat of even the thirstiest of outlaws.
Bottling Day
Fast forward two weeks to bottling day! I calculated based on the volume of liquid the kit would make about four gallons of beer. I began to prepare my work area with two dozen bottles, placed my fermenter on the counter and attached the bottling tube. Having come from using a come from using manual valves, siphons and/or many other methods of the years, I must tell you the bottling tube is a miracle and makes the home brewing faster and more efficent. The bottling process felt like a professional bottling line with no waste of a single drop of the precious golden liquid. The last process was to adding in the carbonation tabs, seal the bottles and starts the timer for a few additional days of fermentation and settling time.
Tasting Day
The Brewferm kit certainly made beer, a tasty Saison that proved to be not bad for an amatuer homebrewer like myself. When I opened the bottle the first note I smelled was citrus and pouring provides a decent head illustrating the carbonation tabs clearly are perfectly fit for standard bottles. The Saison had a nice, dry and crisp flavor one that quenches the thirst of hot summer days. Head over to BrewFerm to learn more about homebrewing systems and how to keep it crafty.
