Deviate Brewing

Deviate Brewing is small scale, the brainchild of co-owners Michael Orkey and Greg Ortwein. With over thirty years of home brewing experience, the two have cultured an intense love for the market. Orkey and Ortwein hope to incorporate their homebrew experience with their love for craft beer.

They target Indianapolis craft beer connoisseurs, offering wood-aged beers and fun flavor combinations in the tasting room. In-house pint and growler sales are a focus at the brewery as they aim to rouse the traditional beer experience into something more intimate.

Deviate Brewing constantly rotates 8 tap offerings. To change with customers’ tastes, small batches of beer are typically brewed and sold, then replaced. The short-term beer cycle helps Deviate Brewing stay flexible and cater to its patron while fulfilling the goal of eccentricity. Located on the Northwest side of Indianapolis, the team at Deviate Brewing is always trying new techniques and combinations to please fellow beer lovers.

Field Brewing - Opening later 2018

Greg and Jackie Dikos have always appreciated and enjoyed craft beer. After living in Seattle for a year, they gained an even deeper love and understanding for how a local brewery can reflect its community. Greg, a homebrewer and orthopedic surgeon, decided to use his beer knowledge for business.

“To us, brewing is a marvelous craft, much like a great bread maker or a gardener tending a garden,” says Jackie. She believes there is beauty in creating something unique from something simple. “We appreciate the skill and craft in all aspects of great beer and food. We hope our guests take away the same meaning.”

Field Brewing runs deeper than sales. It is driven by the Dikos’ passion and respect for the process of brewing, striving to make great beer. The Field Brewing facility is comprised of two buildings separated by a courtyard and dining area. It will serve high quality brews and food, starting with grab-and-go breakfast and espresso at 7am. The food menu varies in offerings from vegan to gluten-free.

“Field Brewing serves just as much as a destination as it does a beer and food establishment,” Jackie says. Guest can come for breakfast, lunch or dinner and expect a unique experience to fuel their day.

Barley Island Brewing Company

Barley Island Brewing started with homebrewer Jeff Eaton. Once a beer judge, he brings true passion to the Indiana craft beer scene and remains hands-on in his work. In 2015, he partnered with Eric Smith to bring quality brews to Noblesville. Beer was the original focus at Barley Island Brewing, but visitors knew it better as a restaurant than a brewery. Thus, owners Eaton and Smith chose to open Deer Creek Brewery, a production facility with a priority to land brews in more restaurants, bars and stores.

Previously, Barley Island Brewing gained much recognition for its Deer Creek Porter, which inspired the name for Deer Creek Brewery. The second venue has allowed Eaton and Smith to start expanding their business in Hamilton County (see next).

Deer Creek Brewery

A few years ago, Barley Island brewed a dark ale and called it Deer Creek Porter. Customers loved the name and the beer, so when the company grew, the brand lived on. Deer Creek Brewery is a spinoff of Barley Island (see previous). Generally used for brewing and carry-out sales, it has a small tap room for sipping drinks.

Barley Island and Deer Creek Brewery give back to the community through numerous beer festivals and donations to local charities. Deer Creek Brewery holds events in its parking lot that support local clubs and causes, as well.

Four Day Ray Brewing

The idea of Four Day Ray Brewing came to fruition in 2012 when homebrewer Brian Graham decided to make his hobby into a business. He rounded up a team—Mitch Ackerman, Matt Troyer and Chris Welsh—and whipped up some brewing formulas. After two years of careful consideration and attention to quality, the group was confident in running a full production facility.

Four Day Ray Brewing makes award winning, flavor forward beers, most with less than 6% ABV. Located in the Nickel Plate District in Fishers, the restaurant/brewery offers a 24-tap tasting room. It is known also for its chef-driven restaurant, which is kid friendly and features the famous Fischer Farms Hand-Breaded Indiana Tenderloin. Every dish from the scratch kitchen uses locally sourced ingredients.

“Our concept is brewing beer that inspires people to do life together,” said Brooke Killey, marketing and events director at Four Day Ray Brewing. “We want to be the connection hub in Fishers for friends and family.”

Four Day Ray strives for consistency and holds a high standard of quality per batch. The beer garden is dog friendly and, if you need a place to congregate with family or friends, there is a unique setting for private parties.

Grand Junction Brewing Co.

Grand Junction Brewing was born out of a desire to link a traditional English pub with craft beer. Founder Jon Knight was born in England and fell in love with the pub scene after frequent visits back home. In 2012, he began home brewing and later decided to open his own brewery.

“Our brewers work their tails off. You have to be dedicated to the craft and truly passionate or it will chew you up and spit you out pretty quickly,” says Knight. “Producing the best product means everything to us.”

What sets Grand Junction Brewing apart from others is its dedication to tradition. “We don’t chase fads or gimmicky beers to make an extra buck,” says Knight. The focus is to brew true-to-style beer while giving back to the community through quality and charity events.

A significant number of Knight’s relatives help run the brewery, but regardless of blood, the crew at Grand Junction Brewing is family. Together they brew beer and cook up tasty pub food, served with a smile. Visit the brewery on Union Street or at its tap room for more food offerings. Grand Junction Brewing is proud to have been embraced by its community for the past four and a half years.

Sun King Brewery

“Brewing is at the core of what we do and who we are at Sun King,” says brewery co-founder Clay Robinson. “It takes passion, hard work and dedication, but it also gives us an opportunity to give back to the communities we serve.”

Sun King is passionate about brewing beer. In 2014, it faced a state law that capped small brewers’ annual production at 30,000 barrels per location. With the help of Three Floyds and support from Brewers of Indiana Guild, Sun King successfully helped raise the barrelage cap from 30,000 to 90,000 barrels per location.

This change allowed Sun King to expand its original downtown Indianapolis brewery, and eventually raise funds to open a small batch brewery in Fishers. “It is a great community and we were drawn to the entrepreneurial spirit that’s largely been driven by Mayor Scott Fadness,” says Robinson. Sun King appreciates how Fishers has defined itself in a modern age and is excited about their upcoming expansion, set to open at the Yard of Fishers District in 2019.

This is all part of a plan to innovate and create new beer. Robinson emphasizes that Sun King is a direct reflection of the brewers who founded it and joined the team. The brewery focuses on and commits to quality, its passion for beer and giving back to the community. It partners with over 400 local community and nonprofit organizations to help them gain publicity and funds. In 2017 alone, Sun King gave back $932,000 in its donations.

The team at MashCraft loves brewing weekly small-batch creations. It is a brewery and a family friendly restaurant, offering hearty pub food and family favorites at a reasonable price. MashCraft’s tap list is ever-changing, varying per location. The establishment is rooted in Greenwood, Indianapolis and Fishers.

Urban Vines Winery & Brewery Co.

The team at Urban Vines is continually learning how to brew. Constantly they work to curate the best possible product, keeping the facility as clean as possible and using only fresh ingredients in the making of small batch beer. Urban Vines is still new to some parts of the brewing industry; it has been producing beer for only six months.

Owner Noah Herron insists that mistakes only make the next batch better and help the team learn their trade. Herron graduated college with a major in biochemistry, which aids his brewing process in allowing him to look further into beer. His knowledge gives him the opportunity to make small changes that others may not consider.

Urban Vines strives to be a family friendly establishment. With a playground, corn hole and other games for kids, the brewing company hopes that everyone can come relax and have a good time. It gets a lot of donation requests for wine and beer from the community, which has also helped expand business. In its first year, Urban Vines donated over $10,000 worth of product to support local charities.
