Azucar Morena: Meet the Maker
Azucar Morena is a family affair. Located in The Garage Food Hall, Andreina Paredes Angulo serves traditional Venezuelan arepas and cachapas alongside her two children, Juan and Matilda.
They use fresh, organic ingredients to create their homemade dishes, which showcase Andreina’s passions for cooking the food and sharing the culture of Venezuela. Azucar Morena’s signature dish, the arepa, is a healthy, all-natural and gluten-free air-fried corn pancake stuffed with your choice of meat, cheeses and vegetables.
Their spot in Indy’s popular food hall is Azucar Morena’s first location, so we chatted with Andreina’s son Juan about all-things The Garage.
Why is The Garage Food Hall important to boosting downtown Indianapolis?
This is the new reality of Indianapolis with such a high economical balance downtown. The Garage is the best place to be on Mass Ave. You can try a variety of cuisines, cocktails and beer, and Bottleworks Hotel is right next door. It’s pretty much an adult hangout.
When customers visit you at The Garage, what is one thing they need to try or buy from you?
Everything. There’s something everyone can eat at any time of day!
Outside of your own business, what maker do you love to visit?
Mama FoFo’s gyros are my #1 dish right now at The Garage.
How is The Garage making a difference for your business? How is it taking you to the next level?
This has been our first experience with opening a business, and we now understand what Azucar Morena can be. This food hall is a high-demand place, so we know we can be ready for anything! We’re already on the next level here at The Garage.
