Smith Family FarmsWebsiteIt is a grain and livestock farm with about 2500 acres of corn and soybeans planted each year. They also have 100 cows, and they raise the calves to sell for freezer beef or for show calves. The Smith's cattle are grass and grain fed. Smith Family Farms is currently in the process of opening a meat market in Pendleton. Until that opens, visitors can buy meat directly from the farm or at the Pendleton, Saxony, or Noblesville farmers’ markets on Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. Starting in October, Smith Family Farms opens up their pumpkin patch where visitors can pick their own pumpkin. The fall festivities also include a petting zoo, pony rides, hayrides, and a corn maze. They’re open every weekend from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Additionally, Smith Family Farms hosts a winter farmer’s market on the second Thursday of each month from November through April. Consumers can buy a wide variety of products including farm fresh freezer beef, pasta, homemade pies, brown eggs, and chickens. |

Distilleries
Starlight DistilleryWebsiteHuber's Orchard, Winery & Vineyards has been family owned and operated in Starlight since 1843, and they’ve been making wine since 1978. In 2001, Huber's began producing brandies and Starlight Distillery was born. And thanks to the new Indiana state law, they added vodka and gin to their product line, and they’re also waiting on 80 barrels of bourbon and 30 barrels of rye whiskey to age. Starlight Distillery’s Vodka is made from locally grown corn. It’s distilled seven times and produced in small batches. Master distiller, Ted Huber, and his co-owner Greg Huber also developed several products produced by infusing their brandy and wines together. Those products include Blueberry Port, Raspberry Infusion, Peach Nectar, Apple and Pear Infusion. Recently the distillery underwent a 10,000 square foot expansion that showcases the distillation process and educates visitors about the farm's rich history. Visitors can also talk with distillers and sample the spirits. Huber’s Starlight Distillery is currently open Monday through Saturday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sundays from noon to 6 p.m. you can buy their products directly from the distillery. |
The Indiana Whiskey Co.WebsiteProprietor Charles Florance is an army veteran. He knew he wanted to set up a whiskey distillery, but he needed to raise money before he could get started. So he started a crowdfunding campaign. Everyone from close friends to complete strangers put money forward, and by the end of October 2012 he raised enough money to carry out his dream. What’s really cool about The Indiana Whiskey Co. is that they have dedicated their business to making sure every dollar Hoosiers pay stays in our state. Their one-of-a-kind still was manufactured locally by Deluxe Sheet Metal. Their water is specially filtered through a system from Watcon on South Main Street in South Bend. Their labels are made by South Bend business Rink Printing. Their bottling is made possible by equipment from Liquid Packaging Solutions in La Porte. And of course, all of the corn and grains used in their whiskey is grown in Indiana. Currently, the distillery offers one type of drink – Silver Sweet Corn Whiskey, and it was the Silver Medal Winner at the 2014 World Spirits Competition. Coming up in 2015, they’ll be rolling out their next product – Straight Cardinal Red Whiskey, and in the fall of 2017 they’ll be serving up Harmar's Defeat Bourbon. You can purchase their Silver Sweet Corn Whiskey directly from the Indiana Whiskey Company in South Bend, or you can find it at select retailers across the state. Three percent of all profits from the Indiana Whiskey Company go to Veterans Support Programs and Organizations in Indiana. |

The Apple WorksWebsiteThe Apple Works began in 1989 when Rick and Sarah Brown began planting trees on what is now the Southern quarter of the orchard. Two years later the trees bore their first crop, and the Browns had already started receiving orders. The Apple Works officially became a business in 1993 when the Browns built the first half of their barn. Since these humble beginnings, the Apple Works has grown into a year-round farm. They open in mid-April with a greenhouse full of bedding plants and hanging baskets. They hit their busy season in September as the majority of their apple trees begin to bear fruit and their “U-pick” pumpkin patch opens. And in December they sell Christmas trees. They also have plenty of activities to keep the kids happy including wagon rides, a petting zoo, a bamboo maze, and a super slide. If you’re looking for an educational experience, the Apple Works hosts field trips where students can learn about what it takes to grow the many different types of apples grown at the orchard and the process to get those apples ready to sell. The Apple Works is in a very rural location near the border of Johnson and Brown Counties. It’s open Monday through Saturday 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sunday 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. |
